COWBOYS ALL - REILLYS - TRANSITIONS FOUNDATIONS - COYOTE ROJO

BLOG ANTIGUA, we are going to take a look at some investors this week. Not just any investors either. These ones we are gonna call COWBOY investors. These are people who are shakin it up and rockn rolling. They are by any other definition insane. Who else will expand or invest in a unstable economy? Well… COWBOYS do! They invest because they know they are in front of the curve, the economy is up an upswing, they know as per previous cycles the financial outlook is picking up and where best to be when that happen but in a position that will grant you the best investment, lowest cost, cheapest rent, and most affordable salaries to head into a boom period.

Who is the cowboy leading the charge in my eyes? Henrik Nielson, of Reilly's fame. Now this isn't just dedicated to Henrik, but this is a dedication of such because I rarely give this much space to any particular client/ friend/ adversary. Yet, it is exactly this type of person that appeals to our business growth, the one who is cautionary, mindful, and adept at changes and success -- Reilly's is by far amongst the most successful businesses in Antigua, now they are in the city, and Nicaragua??? Right On!

Now being cautious/ patient in business is 100% brilliant. Knowing when to make a move is all about guts. No guts, no glory. It is spoken about many successful people that they knew when to make their moves. Henrik has made his move and to look at it from an outsider's viewpoint, looking at it from your view point right here, right now… You can view Guatemala as a traveler's Mecca, most likely these people will visit Nicaragua too. Well, most likely they will visit Reilly's there as well. Most likely, and Henrik never has told me this, any form of this, and I would never divulge this if he did, but, it is my suspicion we can expect a Reilly's in El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Honduras as well. Why now?

It's easy. You take a bit of cash you have saved and you place it down at the track, life is a gamble if not anything less. With your chips down, you roll the dice and hope that lady luck sends you some lovin your way.

Monoloco, I had spoken about Jean Louis T… in my last article. They too see a need for their store in the city. They have captured a central need in Antigua and have maximized their potential for this one location. It was a natural growth for them to expand to the city but it was also done during an economic period of uncertainty. These are the cowboys who will do themselves well during times like this. Where they pull their boots on by the bootstraps and say… giddy up!

Now we do not need to be a CAPITAN INDUSTRIARO <grin> to heed the calling of expansion. One individual from the NGO scene in Antigua that has completely captured my attention is John Bell, working in program development for, TRANSITIONS FOUNDATION OF GUATEMALA. You see, John is taking these down years economically speaking, and flipping his hat to it. I see a constant stream via electronically on the social networks about his cause, and he keeps the message fresh, interesting, and over time it becomes captivating. The message is a good one, help those who are not only physically handicapped assist themselves in life, but help those who cannot help themselves financially as well. This is quite a message to deliver in a time of economic hardship. I do not need to ask John if he is challenged during this era of cutbacks, hoarding, and penny pinching, you know the answer as well. However, TRANSITIONS FOUNDATION OF GUATEMALA (I use allcaps so you can blatantly see the message and consider offering donations) via John Bell has fully expanded to social media to promote and expand the message and John too is a COWBOY giddyup!

We have smaller cowboys as well. People who have worked with others and now are themselves is taking the risk.

Now here is a disclaimer. I have not asked any of the people mentioned in this letter about their work, their permission, nor do am I interested in their expectations or message they wish to deliver. I only personally know Henrik and the other individuals perhaps have met on a couple of occasions in my life. This is only a commentary about an observation.

Back to point above, I wish to talk about Danushka Cayuela. She is the owner of Coyote Rojo, a small, quaint, but completely beautiful little dive across town from the other beautiful dive Café No Se. Danushka has worked for a rather famous hostel in town Gato Negro who themselves deserve a large mention to the attitudes of COWBOYS, but this COWGIRL took a plunge in the middle of a recession and open up a small bar to cater to the sights and sounds of a sect of society that doesn't get their voices heard. Targeting a market is critical for any business. Intentionally targeting a market of arts and performance artists during a down turn is gutsy, ballsy, and this woman has bigger cajones then most of the marketing savvy individuals currently operating in this town right now. I wish Danushka the best of luck in the continued success of her beautiful little business and a belated happy birthday.

There have been many great mavericks in this town, before, some have retired to their islands, eclipsed in our thoughts, esconditod to some far away yard, and some serving in jails. This is Guatemala. I salute these current mavericks and wish them well. If you are seeking to be your own personal COWBOY/ GIRL, contact us. We know the places that are worthy of an investment.
